“Luminous Waltz” is one in a series of paintings that are a little whimsical. Whimsy means unpredictable or outside of what we might call normal or reasonable. The things in this painting are not real. They are not intended to be real, predictable, or reasonable. For me they are abstract, meaning existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence. We tend to think our lives are normal and real, yet our lives are not defined by the physical, but the abstract – our thoughts, hopes, fears, goals, emotions, decisions, and dreams. “Luminous Waltz” is painted from an abstract place within me that I can’t define, nor do I think I desire to do so. It is an exploration of the mystery of who we are.
